Buying a Home


Buying a home is usually one of life’s bigger decisions and investments. It’s important to think about your present situation but also consider the future. Sometimes it takes time to separate needs and wants. There won’t be a perfect home and location. So what are the priorities?

Another step is to determine what you can afford and what type of payments you will be comfortable making. Take the time to interview several Lenders to determine which one is offering you the best deal. Ask your Lender for a “Good Faith Estimate” on a particular loan amount so you have something to compare with the others. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and admit you don’t understand a particular charge. The process is a little daunting. So, it’s okay if you need to think about it before making a decision. It’s wise to look at each lender’s current rate. Most Lenders are not able to lock-in a rate until you have an Accepted Offer. So, the rate is most important when you are ready to make a final decision and obtain a loan.

I think it’s important to find a real estate agent you can trust. It should be someone you eventually feel comfortable sharing important information. Trust isn’t automatic but gained after getting to know the individual. You want to feel that the agent will fulfill their duties of confidentiality.

Another consideration is to choose a real estate agent who is knowledgeable. The agent may not know all the answers but is willing to find them. How long someone has been working is one factor. I also feel it’s wise to check which credentials the realtor has obtained. Do they make an effort to educate themselves?

Lastly, I feel the agent should provide information and discuss the difference between a Selling Agent and a Buyer Agent. It is wise for the buyer to understand how the agent may advise them depending on the relationship they choose.
